Even with limited outdoor space you can create a big impact. Our front porch is a good example of this.

Although our front porch is small and narrow, I’ve learned to make the most of it.

Our front porch is almost all shade so I challenged myself to add a pop of color this year. I found yellow begonias that stood out on our porch and set the tone and color scheme for everything else.

Considering porches are the first thing guests see, I find it worth the time investment to update ours seasonally. Plus, it helps boost our home’s curb appeal.

I have two benches on our porch for the seating area. Even though it’s a small space, they offer plenty of room for sitting without taking up too much space.

Our little porch is the perfect place to cool off on hot summer days thanks to the big oak tree in our front yard.

We added the lattice years ago for extra privacy and I planted a climbing hydrangea vine. That has grown nicely up through the lattice.

The mirror was found at a thrift store for $10 so I added that to the trellis for visual interest. The lattice, the vine, and the mirror don’t take up any space on the porch but make a big statement!

Additionally, I keep a blanket on the bench which brings a little bit of the indoors outside and makes it more inviting. I keep that blanket for outdoor use only.

Occasionally, I’ll switch that out for a vintage quilt like I did last year for my patriotic porch.

Going vertical in small spaces is one of the best ways to add interest.

Another thing I did out here was to paint the concrete porch floor. I painted them to look like planks, which have held up beautifully for many years.

That project took a little bit of time but was worth it. It completely transformed this little porch.

We have a variety of front porch planters, which I’ll often change, depending on which front porch plants I have seasonally.

Container plants are your best friend if you love to garden but have limited space!

This large potted plant container was a recent find when I was out antique picking. It’s from the 1920s and I couldn’t scoop that up fast enough when I saw it! To make it even prettier, I lined the cast iron planter with moss.

I love incorporating my vintage finds outdoors as well as inside. Outdoors they pair so well with plants and flowers and give a cottage look.

Vintage planters mix well with terracotta flower pots as well. Terracotta is one thing I never pass up when I see it at the flea market!

I always do a trio of plants or decor right next to the front door. Decorating in threes always looks good.

The small white stool and tall post are both thrift finds that work so well here. Before I found the post I had a DIY welcome sign for height in this spot but switched that out for a change.

Both the small stool and the post are great for use as a plant stand. The stool doubles as an extra seat if needed.

This spot next to the door gets partial sun in the afternoons so I can have plants that require only partial shade here.

How is this for small front porch ideas with plants that have a pop of color?

Begonias are a great choice for adding color in shady areas and the yellow stands out beautifully. They’re such an easy way to add eye-catching color!

Though the front porch color scheme is very yellow right now, as these containers fill in, we will see more warm reds with the Coleus plants.

We’ll also see more green with the Boston fern, Sweet Potato Vines, Ferns, and English Ivy I used in the containers. So that everything I planted here will transition nicely into fall later on.

These are all low-maintenance plants. Just keep them from drying out completely and they will thrive.

In the front of the house, I have a shade garden planted right next to the porch. In this garden, I have warm purples and greens with Huechera and Hosta Plants.

It took me many years to get this cottage-style front garden right but it’s almost fully there.

Also in our front shade garden, we have a dwarf Japanese maple tree, daylilies, and a boxwood (not shown).

Outside our front door, I have a jute-striped indoor outdoor rug layered underneath a traditional welcome mat. A new doormat alone can make a big difference.

Small details matter when there’s limited space.

BEST PLANTS FOR SMALL SHADE PORCH

Using containers for small porches is a great way to add more plants and flowers. Here is a list of the plants I use to add color and interest to our small, shady porch.

  • Begonias
  • Impatiens
  • Coleus Plants
  • Assorted Ferns
  • Ivy
  • Potato Vines
  • Creeping Jenny
  • Petunias

Many of the plants listed come in different varieties and colors. I will often use several of the same plants in different varieties. For example, I will buy Colues in several different colors to mix in with my containers.

For porches that get more light than mine, see this list of full-sun porch plants.

While restraint is key in small spaces, including outdoors, can you ever really have too many plants?

Whether your porch is full sun or full shade, using small containers at different heights is a great way to layer in plants, color, and interest. You can see more container garden recipes here.

Freshening up the porch for summer made a huge difference. Every time I walk up to the front entry it feels so inviting.

What do you think of the bright blooms on my small front porch this year?
