Simple Halloween Decorating

With our move coming up and construction going on, I did not intend to decorate for Halloween or fall this year.

But when out thrifting recently, I came across the cutest paper mache Halloween decorations. Those inspired me to do a little simple Halloween decorating this year. No matter how busy I get, I can’t turn off the decorating part of my brain.

I do not enjoy creepy decorations that give a scary vibe. That kind of decoration isn’t my style. No giant spiders or fake blood in this house!

In our small entry way near the front door, I used my favorite branches of faux leaves. These make an appearance every year, they are the best faux leaves I’ve ever found. They were from the Christmas Tree Shop, anyone else miss that store?

Next to those, I have a real blush-colored pumpkin and a cute primitive style witch hat. Real pumpkins are always good for adding texture and creating a color scheme.

Plus, you don’t have to store them away all year once the season is over. I always throw them in the back of my yard hoping they’ll grow next year. Only once did that work.

Those three things were all it took to dress up this spot for the season. My small entryway is a great place to add just a few seasonal accents.

Next to my TV table, I added these three baskets. I had been slowly picking those up as I found them while out thrifting, waiting until I finally had three of them. I store my little niece’s toys in those for when she comes over. I’m always looking for creative ways to sneak in more storage space.

The vintage paper mache black cat looks cute as a topper there.

Over my mantel, I already had the vintage framed artworks, the candles, and the vintage jug. I had purchased that Halloween banner bunting to use at the antique shop. When I received it, it was much smaller than I thought it was so I ended up keeping that one.

It is really cute with the little fox fabric in the center. This was handmade by an Etsy seller.

On the lower part of the mantel, I have a wicker broom and a large gourd. Super simple and just enough.

My second vintage Halloween paper mache guy is nestled in between those things.

On the opposite side of the mantel is this cute pumpkin wearing an old witch hat.

The only other thing I did on the mantel was to add that wicker pumpkin. I found that in one of the bins I was going through.

My simple Halloween decorations this year fit into the Fall-o-ween style we talked about last year, but more on the minimalist side.

In my dining nook, I did nothing other than add a basket full of dried hydrangeas from the garden.

One other festive Halloween thing I did was to make this haunted house cake. I had seen a similar one in a local bakery and loved the idea. Recreating it was pretty easy.

I did buy the haunted house chocolate mold as well as a few other small chocolate molds for Halloween. It’s not perfect, my cake-decorating skills are a little rusty. But it’s not bad for how out of practice I am. It’s something I want to do more of once we move and settle in.

As you can see just a few creative ideas can get you in the Halloween spirit. Creating a few small vignettes is an easy way to decorate without going all out. You can also sprinkle in tea light candles for ambiance and maximum impact.

Additionally, those little paper bats go a long way for simple Halloween decoration ideas. Witch hats are another easy idea that makes it easy to get in on the Halloween fun.

I ran out of time to do any outdoor Halloween decorations this year, but you can see my pretty fall front porch from last year here. That was a favorite of mine. Plus, with the drought we’ve been having, I didn’t want to buy mums if they weren’t going to last.

You can also see how I used mini pumpkins I found at the dollar store one year to make a simple yet impactful porch display here. You could take that idea a step further and add string lights to the arbor.

A lot of times, the simplest ideas turn out the best!

Happy Halloween!
