9 No-Fail Interior Design Tips
These 9 interior design tips and tricks from professional designers are foolproof!
I believe there are only a select few people who are born with a natural talent for interior design. For the rest of us, it takes practice to get good at. Just like anything else.
However, there are a few tricks that can help you along the way. Today I’ve rounded up 9 no-fail interior design tips from talented designers.
“You’ll never get tired of a white living room.” – House Beautiful
White rooms have been the rage for a while now and I don’t see that trend ending any time soon. White paint makes a room feel open, airy and bright while providing the perfect backdrop for whatever accent colors you choose. And if your tastes change often, as mine do, you won’t have to repaint to match your latest design choices.
“The most versatile coffee table you will ever own is an ottoman.” -House Beautiful
I would like to add to this by saying the most versatile coffee table you will ever own is a storage ottoman. The possibilities are almost endless, extra seating, extra storage, use it as a footrest, or add a serving tray and use as a table.

“Lighting can make or break a design.” – Tonya Mickelson
OK, I should have listed this one first. There is nothing worse than feeling like you are under interrogation lights!
There are many ways to address this problem. Adding dimmers to your switches is relatively easy. Vary the heights of lighting in a room, you don’t want everything on the same plane. Use soft pink light bulbs for a flattering glow. Or use these light bulbs to cast a pure white light as opposed to the ugly yellow light many light bulbs project.
In the next picture of this amazing kitchen, you will notice ceiling lights, pendant lights and task lighting under the range hood. The varying heights add interest as well as provide task lighting.

“Books add soul to a rooms design scheme.” –Vern Yip
I am a firm believer in this tip! What better way to warm up a room than with books? Not only do they add warmth, but they also add color and texture. And they make a versatile decorating accessory whether on a mantel (or in one!), a shelf or to give height in your vignettes.
“Use decorative mirrors to add instant light to your living space.”-unknown
This may be the oldest tip in the book, but for good reason. It works every time! Mirrors not only brighten a room, but they also make it appear more spacious. Place one opposite or perpendicular to a window to really bounce the light around.
“Add architectural interest.”
There is no better way to elevate your room and increase the value of your home than by adding architectural details. There are many ways to achieve this look. Adding wainscoting, board and batten, crown molding, or ceiling beams are some examples.
And if you’re on a tight budget, there are even ways to fake molding.
“Choose mismatched seating.” –House Beautiful
The idea here is to have your home look collected and not as if it just came out of the furniture store’s showroom.
If you already own a matched set, try repainting some of the pieces or swapping pieces out to another room. For example, a nightstand can be an end table in your family room. Get creative!
“Pick your paint colors last.” –House Beautiful
With the endless options in paint colors, it is much easier to match your paint to your bedding, rugs and fabrics than vice versa. Enough said.
“Add Greenery.”
Browse through home pictures and you’ll be hard pressed to find one that does not contain some greenery or some fresh flowers.
Potted plants add softness and flowers add life to a room. In addition, many house plants purify the air. That’s a win-win. There’s no reason not to have one!
