The Fourth of July is always a fun time to bring people together and celebrate something historic. Those celebrations inevitably will take place in backyards all across the country.
It’s one of my favorite holidays to get creative with food and decorations. Whether you’re hosting a large 4th of July backyard party this year, or keeping it simple with the family, here are a few ideas to steal!
And while I do like to get creative, I also like to keep this holiday simple. After all, summer is all about taking things a little easier.
interesting facts about the 4th of July
The first national July 4th celebration was in 1801 and was held at the White House. But Independence Day didn’t become an official holiday until 1870, 100 years after the USA was founded!
fourth of July backyard decorations
The best and easiest backyard decoration for the fourth is a large flag. This one shown above on my shed is a vintage hand-sewn flag with 48 stars. One of my favorite flea market finds ever.
banners, buntings, and bows
When it comes to the fourth, I also love banners and buntings! They’re such an easy way to add a ton of festivity to your backyard!
The more traditional, half-circle flag buntings never get old either. These look great anywhere you put them.
These red, white, and blue bows caught my eye. A few of these would go a long way to add the stars and stripes to your yard! For a more formal party, I could see these hung on the backs of white chairs.
Adding a row of flags anywhere in the yard is always a good idea. Fortunately, small and medium flags are relatively inexpensive enough that it won’t break the bank to achieve this.

These American star picks would be great for appetizers, desserts, or for use as cocktail stirrers.
I thought these dishtowels were especially pretty. They have an old-world look to them. You could also use them as placemats for your table setting.
