Patterned Roman Shades: The Finishing Touch Our Kitchen Needed
Patterned Roman shades turned out to be the finishing touch our kitchen was missing, and I didn’t realize just how much they would change the entire feel of the room.
While the majority of our renovations were done during construction, there were (and still are) a lot of unfinished details I hadn’t gotten to, especially in the kitchen. While I love our kitchen windows open, I did want to add some treatments so I could close them for privacy at night.
I wanted the window treatments to be beautiful and not just functional, so I had my eye out for patterned Roman blinds.
Why Our Kitchen Windows Needed Something
Additionally, I felt the kitchen needed a little more warmth. Something to help create that cottage feel and also balance out the wood accents throughout the room.
I enjoyed the clean look of the bare windows for a while, but over time, the space started to feel a little unfinished.
After living with the new kitchen for a year, I’m ready to add in a few more layers.
Why I Chose Patterned Roman Shades
While patterned fabrics are very “in” right now, that isn’t why I chose patterned Roman shades for our kitchen. I’ve tried to stick with my original design plan of a vintage country cottage theme and classic, but not boring, choices.
Roman blinds are always classic, and pattern helps create a cottage-style interior. For those reasons, patterned fabric was a logical choice for our kitchen.
Choosing a Pattern that works for your room
Layering multiple patterns in a room is also very on trend right now. I didn’t want to go crazy with that, especially in the kitchen. I do, however, have a patterned curtain on our skirted drainboard sink. That same fabric also covers our adjacent dining room window.
Mixing patterns isn’t difficult. The best way to do it is by using patterns of different scales. If one is a large print, another can be a small print. Additionally, using fabrics in colors that tie together also helps (but don’t be afraid to contrast too).
Going With Custom Roman Shades
For our blinds, I went with Two Pages Curtains. If you like patterned window treatments, they really offer a great selection to choose from. (I wish more furniture makers had as many pattern options!).
I received a sample book of fabrics, so I was able to view how they would look in the room. Though I did love all the designs, I chose the pattern shown above. It complements the other colors in the room and helps to balance the wood tones.
The exact blinds I chose are the Rebecca Hughes Pattern Cotton Roman Shade in the beige brown check.
How the Roman Shades Changed the Look of the Kitchen
The patterned Roman Shades really added another layer of warmth to our kitchen. They’re beautiful when opened during the day and also give us the nighttime privacy I was looking for.
These particular shades are corded, as this pattern and style weren’t available with a cordless option. They have a white pull chain on the right side that blends in and is barely noticeable. The cord can also be easily adjusted, allowing you to customize how high or low the shades sit when fully raised.
Additionally, we also opted for inside mount since we had enough depth to do so. I always prefer that over outside mount whenever possible.
The Finishing Touch I Didn’t Know the Kitchen Needed
We spend so much time thinking about the major decisions in a room such as cabinets, countertops, flooring, furniture, that it’s easy to underestimate the finishing layers.
Sometimes fabric, pattern, and softness are what turn a finished room into one that feels like home. Which is why I’ve been intentionally taking my time with these additional decisions and not rushing to add anything I don’t absolutely love.
I’m glad I waited for just the right window treatments; these are just what I had in mind.
A few more things that still need to be done in our kitchen are: hang a pot rack over the island, install a beadboard backsplash, get new stools for the island, and finish painting.
It’s shocking how fast a year went by already, and I still haven’t gotten to these details. I’ve even had the pot rack since before we moved in.
All good things take time, and right now I’m very happy to have finally found window treatments I love.
