Decorating for Halloween doesn’t have to mean filling the house with spooky decorations – I’m not a fan of the scary stuff. Sometimes a few small changes are all it takes to make your home feel festive for the season!

This year, I kept my indoor Halloween decorating simple. Instead of changing everything around, I mixed a handful of Halloween decorations with things I already had, including antique books, baskets, candles, and fall flowers.

I also worked in a few easy DIY Halloween decorations that didn’t take much time or money.

If you enjoy decorating for Halloween but don’t want to go overboard, here are some simple ideas you can recreate by mixing simple Halloween decorations with what you already have at home.

How to Mix Halloween Decorations With Your Everyday Decor

One of the easiest ways to decorate for Halloween is to start with what’s already in your home rather than creating completely new displays.

I like to work Halloween decorations into existing arrangements. A witch hat, a rustic broom, or a small seasonal accessory can change the look of a space without having to rearrange everything.

The trick is to choose a few spots where your Halloween pieces will stand out and let the rest of your decor stay as it is.

You can also mix Halloween accents with traditional fall decorations. Pumpkins, branches, and fall flowers work well with witch hats, black birds, and other Halloween accessories, so you don’t have to choose between the two.

Easy Halloween Decorating Ideas

Here are a few easy Halloween decorating ideas I used around my house this year.

1. Add a Witch Hat to an Everyday Display

One of the simplest Halloween decorating ideas is to add a witch hat to something you already have on display.

I placed one on top of my stack of vintage picnic baskets. The baskets are part of my everyday decor, but adding the hat gives this little corner a fun Halloween touch.

This would work just as well on an entryway bench, a coat rack, or a stack of old books.

It’s a good example of how one small decoration can make a noticeable difference without adding much clutter.

2. Tuck Black Crows Into Your Everyday Decor

One really easy Halloween decorating trick is adding a few black birds to things I already have on display.

I tucked several black birds in and around the shelves in my sunroom. One is perched on the corner of an antique picture frame, which gives the whole arrangement a slightly spooky look without being over the top.

The nice thing about these birds is that you don’t have to rearrange anything. Just perch one on a picture frame, tuck another among your books, or add one to a basket.

They’re inexpensive, easy to move around, and take up almost no room. Sometimes the smallest additions make the biggest difference!

3. Make a Rustic Witch’s Broom With a Branch

I love the look of old-fashioned witch’s brooms, especially when they’re slightly crooked and imperfect.

For one of mine, I started with a store-bought broom (called a cinnamon broom) and added a large branch to give it height and character.

It’s such a simple way to make an ordinary decoration look a little more interesting.

To Recreate The Look:

  • Start with a store-bought broom (I used a cinnamon broom)
  • Find a tall, sturdy branch with an interesting natural shape
  • Attach the branch to the broom handle (I used twine)
  • Optional: Add a strand of lights ( I used a battery-operated glimmer string)

I like the look of these brooms leaning in an otherwise empty corner. They add just enough Halloween character without taking up much space.

You could also keep it simple and place a small broom near the door. I did that in our sunroom.

Both are cute, but the taller broom has more impact.

4. Tuck Small Halloween Decorations Among Antique Books

Another easy Halloween decorating idea is to add a small decoration to a shelf or tabletop arrangement.

I placed this little fabric witch hat (see similar witch hat) on a stack of antique books. The worn book covers and dark colors make a nice backdrop for the witch hat.

I didn’t need to add anything else to make it feel like Halloween.

This is also a good trick for decorating bookshelves. Rather than clearing everything off and starting over, tuck a few seasonal pieces between the things you normally display.

Even one small addition can make a shelf feel festive.

5. Mix Fall Flowers With Halloween Decorations

Fall flowers and Halloween decorations don’t have to be separate.

On my bookcase, I used a basket filled with yellow sunflowers and reddish fall leaves alongside my Halloween accents and antique books.

The flowers bring in plenty of autumn color, while the accents add a subtle Halloween touch.

A few ideas that make this combination work:

  • Baskets, crocks, or other containers you can fill
  • Choose just one or two Halloween decorations for a simple look
  • Mix natural textures, for example, baskets and dried gourds
  • Leave some space in between

The best part is that once Halloween is over, I can remove the Halloween accents and keep the fall flowers and gourds on display.

I’ve used this same approach before with my fall living room decor, adding seasonal color and natural elements to things I already had around the house.

6. Add a Little Sparkle to Traditional Halloween Decorations

Not all Halloween decorations have to be scary!

This little bedazzled skull is a good example. The sparkly finish gives it a fun, unexpected look that’s more playful than spooky.

I can’t take credit for this idea. My daughter made this using a bedazzle kit and a small, store -bought skull. I thought it was adorable! You could use this for other things too; it would make a great idea for no-carve pumpkins!

It’s a fun way to add a little Halloween personality without changing the whole arrangement.

If you don’t love the usual scary Halloween decorations, try looking for smaller accessories with an unexpected finish or a little sparkle. They can make even traditional Halloween decorations feel more lighthearted.

I love that Halloween decorating doesn’t have to be all orange and black. Even the latest Halloween decorating trends include natural elements, vintage-inspired pieces, and colors that work with your everyday decor.

7. Make Easy DIY Halloween Decorations With Vintage Graphics

Another way to add Halloween decorations without spending much is to make a few yourself.

I found this Halloween graphic on Etsy and used it to decoupage a plain can. The old-fashioned pumpkin characters give it a fun, nostalgic look.

Although I didn’t get around to using the finished can in my decorating, I still thought it was cute enough to share.

It’s an easy project and could be used for flowers or mini pumpkins. It’s also cute enough to sit on a shelf as is.

How to Decoupage a Can With a Halloween Graphic

  • Find a clean empty can
  • Print a Halloween graphic ( I used this vintage-inspired graphic)
  • Attach the graphic to the can using a foam brush dipped in Modge Podge

I liked those vintage-inspired graphics so much, I made a second decoration with this cat graphic.

For the black cat graphic, I attached it to a small wood round I found at the craft store. The vintage graphics are very budget-friendly ideas.

8. Use Pumpkins as Part of Your Everyday Decor

Pumpkins are probably the easiest fall decoration to incorporate into a room because they look good with just about anything.

I placed this muted-colored pumpkin on a wooden chest, surrounded by a simple grapevine wreath.

Nearby, the decorative candleholders add a little height without making the arrangement feel too busy.

I especially like pumpkins in softer or more muted colors because they’re easy to mix with the things I already have in my home.

You can recreate a similar arrangement on a coffee table, sideboard, or entry table.

Try setting a single pumpkin on a tray, in a basket, or on a stack of books to give it a little more presence.

This is another display that works throughout the entire fall season, not just for Halloween.

How to Decorate for Halloween Without Going Overboard

If you want to decorate for Halloween but still keep your home feeling like your own, here are a few simple tips:

  • Start with what you have. Before buying anything new, look at your existing shelves, baskets, books, and other accessories.
  • Decorate a few small areas. You don’t need Halloween decorations in every corner of the house.
  • Choose pieces that fit your style. Whether you like vintage, traditional, or modern decorating, choose Halloween accessories that work with your everyday decor.
  • Mix Halloween with fall. Pumpkins, branches, and fall flowers can stay out long after Halloween is over. ( I call this Falloween)
  • Try a small DIY project. Sometimes a simple handmade decoration adds more personality than a whole collection of store-bought pieces
  • Keep your favorite everyday pieces out. Adding seasonal decorations doesn’t have to mean replacing everything you love.

How To Keep Halloween Decorating Simple

For me, Halloween decorating is more about having a little fun with the season than completely transforming the house.

A rustic broom in the corner, a witch hat on a stack of baskets, or one little Halloween decoration tucked among my antique books is enough to make things feel festive.

And that’s what I like most about these easy Halloween decorating ideas. They’re simple to recreate, don’t require a lot of decorations, and still let your everyday decorating style shine through.

If you enjoy decorating for fall but don’t love anything too scary or over-the-top, I hope these ideas inspire you to add a few fun Halloween touches to your own home!
