Rustic Outdoor Fall Decorating Ideas

Easy rustic outdoor fall decorating ideas using vintage finds, old garden accessories, colorful mums, and pumpkins you can style on a budget.
Decorating outside for fall doesn’t have to mean buying a bunch of new decorations. Some of my favorite fall displays have come together using things I already had around the house, a few vintage finds, and of course, pumpkins.
This year I had some fun adding a little fall color around our rustic shed. Between the old garden accessories, weathered furniture, and colorful mums, it didn’t take much to make the area feel ready for autumn.
If you love a collected, rustic look, you can easily recreate these simple outdoor fall decorating ideas in your own yard, garden, or porch.
Rustic decorating never really goes out of style, but it’s especially popular this year. In fact, Country Living recently highlighted โAlpine Nostalgiaโ as one of the biggest fall decorating trends. This trend includes a mix of natural materials, vintage finds, and cozy, lived-in charm.
Create a Rustic Fall Display With Vintage Finds

One of my favorite ways to decorate for fall is to start with things I already own. Old watering cans, terracotta pots, wooden benches, and other garden accessories are perfect for creating rustic outdoor displays.
For this area beside our shed, I used a simple bench to hold a vintage sign, a few pumpkins, and some fall flowers. An old plant stand filled with terracotta pots adds height on one side, while a yellow watering can adds a little unexpected color.

The weathered wood siding and chippy window frame make a pretty backdrop without needing much additional decoration.
If you’re putting together something similar, start with one larger piece, such as a bench or table, and build around it. Use taller pieces toward the back and smaller items in front so everything can be seen.

You don’t need a lot of decorations, either. Sometimes a few interesting pieces grouped together make more of an impact than filling every available space.
Use Old Furniture to Display Pumpkins

Before buying anything new for outdoor fall decorating, look around for furniture you might be able to repurpose.
An old wooden chair is one of my favorite things to decorate with, especially when the paint is worn and chippy.
I stacked three pumpkins on this vintage chair, and that was really all it needed. The colorful pumpkins look so pretty against the faded red paint and weathered wood of the shed.
An old stool, small table, wooden crate, or garden bench would work just as well.
Using furniture also gives your pumpkins height, which makes them stand out more than if they were all sitting on the ground.
When buying pumpkins, I look for stems that are bent over or flat for stacking on the bottom. You could even grab one or two with missing stems.
Mix and Stack Pumpkins for Color and Height

In another area beside the shed, I used an old wooden bench, a weathered metal milk can, and a vintage iron planter to create different levels for displaying pumpkins and flowers.
When decorating with pumpkins, I like mixing different colors, shapes, and sizes rather than using only traditional orange ones.
The pale green, soft orange, and variegated pumpkins in these displays add plenty of fall color without everything being full-on orange.
If you want to try stacking pumpkins, look for varieties with flatter tops and bottoms. Start with the largest, most stable pumpkin and work your way up to smaller ones.
You can also arrange pumpkins at different heights without stacking them directly on top of one another. Sometimes moving just one pumpkin or adding a little height makes everything look more balanced.
The mix of colors and textures keeps the arrangement interesting, even though it’s made up of just a handful of pieces.
Repurpose a Vintage Wagon for Fall Flowers

Another easy way to create rustic outdoor fall decor is to use something unexpected as a planter or flower display.
I was using this old red Radio Flyer wagon to move some mums and other fall flowers to the backyard when I realized how pretty they looked just sitting in the wagon. Sometimes the best decorating ideas happen by accident! The faded red paint looks especially pretty with the pink, yellow, and orange blooms.
What I love about this idea is that the wagon makes even ordinary potted flowers look more interesting.
And you don’t necessarily need to plant anything. I left the flowers in their pots, which makes it easy to rearrange them or replace one as needed. Also, mums never last a long time for me.
If you don’t have a vintage wagon, try using an old wheelbarrow, wooden crate, or large galvanized tub.
Mums in nursery pots can dry out fast, especially during warm fall afternoons. Check the soil often and water as needed. Also, don’t let excess water collect in the bottom of a wagon or other container.
This is a simple idea that would work in a backyard, near a garden shed, or even on a large porch.
How to Decorate Outside for Fall Without Spending Much Money
You don’t have to spend a fortune on seasonal decorations to make your outdoor spaces look pretty for fall. Here are a few ways to decorate on a budget.
- Shop your own home first. Look around your garage, basement, or garden shed for things you can repurpose. Old chairs, wooden crates, watering cans, and baskets all make great fall decorations.
- Reuse what you already have outside. Instead of buying new planters, fill your existing pots and containers with mums or other seasonal flowers.
- Visit thrift stores and flea markets. Keep an eye out for inexpensive vintage garden accessories, old stools, and weathered furniture that can be used year after year.
- Let pumpkins do the decorating. A few pumpkins in different shapes and colors can make a beautiful display without needing much else.
- Use natural elements. Gather fallen branches, gourds, pinecones, or colorful leaves from your yard to add texture to your arrangements.
- Concentrate on one area. Rather than spreading decorations throughout your yard, create one pretty focal point near your front door, garden shed, or patio.
- Choose decorations you can reuse. Invest in pieces that work for more than one season. A vintage bench or old watering can looks just as charming in spring and summer as it does surrounded by pumpkins in fall.
I find that some of the prettiest outdoor displays come together when I use things I’ve collected over time. A few pumpkins and fall flowers are often all I need to give everything a fresh seasonal look.
Rustic outdoor fall decorating doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. I love finding new ways to use things I already own, especially when it means giving an old piece a new purpose. Hopefully these ideas inspire you to shop your own home before heading out to buy more fall decorations!
