Alice In Wonderland Decorations DIY for Halloween
USING ALICE IN WONDERLAND DECORATIONS DIY STYLE IS A FUN AND CREATIVE WAY TO DECORATE FOR HALLOWEEN!
It can sometimes be difficult to come up with new and creative ideas. Especially now that everything is easily found online. Recently, an idea inspired me to create an Alice in Wonderland Halloween mantel in my living room.
And I was shocked when I realized that I really haven’t seen this done yet.
The idea came to me when I was visiting my daughter in Georgia. We ate at a restaurant called the Mellow Mushroom. It’s a franchise down south and each restaurant is decorated in a different theme.
The restaurant we ate in was decorated with an Alice in Wonderland theme. (By the way, the food was great, I’m hoping they bring this chain to NJ!).
This had my head spinning with ideas for an Alice in Wonderland theme for my Halloween mantel.
Too many ideas, actually. You can literally go down the rabbit hole with the amount of things you can do with that theme.
It was hard to narrow it down to what could fit on a mantel. While also having it be Halloween-themed and aesthetically pleasing. Then add to the list that I didn’t want to spend a lot of money creating it.
It wasn’t easy, and the first version got completely taken down.
One thing I thought I needed was a very large clock. A normal size clock wouldn’t do.
I checked the thrift store and the flea market and I couldn’t find one. I was going to scrap this whole idea when I mentioned it to a friend who sells out of the same antique shop I do.
She happened to have a large clock for sale that she offered to let me borrow for my mantel. That was the key element I was missing and it reinspired me to start over.
And I’m glad I did because I really had fun with this. Here, I’ll show you what I came up with for Alice in Wonderland decorations DIY style – for Halloween.
Alice in Wonderland decoration ideas
As mentioned, I used only what I could fit on my mantel. But here is a list of ideas to create your own Alice in Wonderland decorations DIY style!
- Cheshire Cat
- Tea Party Decor
- Mad Hatter – Top Hat
- Mushrooms
- Rabbit
- Queen of Hearts
- Clocks
- Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
- Playing Cards
Wonderland themed printables
I knew I wanted a framed rabbit portrait because that would serve as both a wonderland theme and Halloween. He was framed in a simple black picture frame I already had.
I found a set of Alice in Wonderland printables for instant download on Etsy for under $1.00.
I’m sure you could also find free printables with a Google search, but I really liked these. They were worth a little extra cost to me.
Alice in Wonderland Garden theme ideas
Another element I wanted to include was a garden theme. Using mushrooms was another fun way to incorporate the two. I bought these adorable mushroom candles and placed them on stacks of vintage books.
Both the tall mushroom and short mushroom were 50% off and are now on clearance. They’re cute enough to use well after Halloween.
I also cut up sheet moss to lay over the books to add to the garden element.
On the opposite side of the mantel, I used faux flowers in a vintage tin. Additionally, I draped faux greenery over the mantel edge.
tiny Alice idea
While I couldn’t find a clock at the flea market, I did come accross this Alice in Wonderland tea party sketch. I had to incorporate that into my mantel because it was such a unique find!
I wanted to hide a small DIY Alice in here somewhere but found the sketch to be a great way to sneak Alice in subtly.
Because I didn’t use any candles on this mantel, I picked up these cute mushroom string lights for ambiance. This is also something I can use all year long.
Cheshire cat
Then I bought a second set of printables for only a few dollars because I really liked the Cheshire cat in this set. I actually cropped it and enlarged it before printing it. The black cat also lends to the combined Halloween/wonderland theme.
The Welcome to Wonderland sign looked slightly small above the mantel so I added the cat to that. He gave it a little more visual weight.
Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
You may have noticed the large teapot in silver. I pulled that from my antique shop for this mantel. In the photo below you can see I was trying out different greenery.
Ultimately, I went with more greenery as opposed to the purple roses shown here. Red roses or even white roses might have been better but purple was what I had.
I also had vintage teacups that I stacked with faux orange flowers. After seeing this tea party garland online I almost bought it but decided against it so as to keep this to a reasonable budget.
To give a nod to the mad hatter, I bought a Halloween headband with a top hat attached to it. That was also on clearance.
I removed the skull that was originally on it and replaced it with a green ribbon and the note. To be honest, I’ve never seen the movie in its entirety so I don’t know what exactly that note means.
Playing Cards
Another thing I almost bought but didn’t was these extra large playing cards. I considered making them into a garland but again decided against overspending on this.
Rather than buy those, I printed out the suits from cards and taped them to the mantel. You could also add some type of queen of hearts decor if you are doing your own wonderland theme.
Mini pumpkins for Halloween
Lastly, I added gourds and mini pumpkins to fill out the mantel and to include more Halloween-themed items to balance it out.
I had so much fun pulling this idea together! Thanks to my friend Cheryl of Recycled Relics for letting me borrow the large clock. It really made the mantel complete.
This whole idea made me want to host an Alice in Wonderland-themed party for Halloween and have everyone dress as Wonderland characters. (Maybe next year!) It would also be a fun idea for a little girl’s wonderland birthday party.
For now, it’s almost time to get the Christmas ideas spinning!

Very imaginative! The two themes Alice/Halloween are so complimentary. Your choices are spot on – the tea set garland was too summer-y looking. Now all you need is the actual book for your display!
Thanks, Ruth. I love the book idea!
This is really cute and since I’m scary Halloween averse it’s perfect. Well done, really thought out and classy, not cheesy.
Thank you, Pamela! I am also scary Halloween averse!
Good job. Looks great.
Looking forward to seeing your Christmas mantel.
Thanks, now I just need new ideas for that!
Absolutely love this, and you can bet I’m going to borrow some of your ideas if I ever get a mantle. (I agree with the previous poster…all you need is a copy of Alice in Wonderland!) I also love the ideas for a birthday party, tea party and costume party. I love your budget-friendly ideas and wish I lived closer to NJ to check out your shop (I’m in Oregon). I’m looking forward to your Christmas ideas. But for now, happy Halloween! (I’d love to send you a picture of my scarecrow-themed front porch but I’m not technically savvy enough.🤔)
Thanks so much, Tamara! I’d love to see your scarecrow themed porch! Can you send it via Instagram DM’s? And if you don’t have a mantel you can use these ideas for a console table, on shelves or even a dining table. Happy Halloween!
