French Doors On Bedroom Closet – Before And After Makeover
We replaced our outdated closet doors with charming vintage French doors on bedroom closet, and the transformation is drastic!

I’ve done many closet door makeovers in our current house, all of which were major improvements.
However, in our new house, we just completed a bedroom closet door makeover, which is by far my favorite transformation to date.
Today, I wanted to share this idea with you and show you how we did it (on a budget). It’s amazing what a difference changing up closet doors can make for the overall room!
French Doors on bedroom closet – recent makeover
In our daughter’s bedroom in the new house, we started with old sliding doors. They were very outdated wooden doors, complete with a wooden valance.
Full disclosure – I forgot to snap a before photo! The builders had already removed the old doors before it crossed my mind. But here’s a photo of the basement closet doors, which are exactly the same as the ones in the bedroom.

My idea for the bedroom closet doors was to use French doors on the closet for a unique look.
Rather than buy new closet doors, I wanted to find a used pair of French wooden doors because they’re better quality. I don’t love the type sold at the home stores. Plus, the store-bought doors are far more expensive than used.
It took me months to find a pair in the right size! Fortunately, my patience paid off. The perfect pair appeared on Facebook Marketplace for only $70, and they were right in the same town we live in.
They even came with all the hinges and hardware to install them on our door frame.

Here is how they looked at that point. I loved it already.

Next, we added these stunning vintage-inspired doorknobs with backplates to further enhance the look. As you’ll see, we used those doorknobs throughout the entire house.

What’s great about French doors on the closet is that the double doors open for easy access to the whole closet at once, whereas traditional sliding doors only offer access to one side at a time.

Using French doors rather than traditional doors for a closet meant we had to add curtains to hide the contents of the closet. I bought light-filtering door panel curtains and a set of oval sash rods to install on the back of the door.
This is exactly the look I had envisioned when I got the idea.

As a bonus, the electricians had installed a light in this closet, which really draws attention to the doors when it’s on. It could also double as an ambient night light.
These French doors on the bedroom closet are one of my favorite details in the new house. They were a perfect way to add a little character to this room!
You may have also noticed the chandelier on the ceiling. It actually has a small ceiling fan in the center. It was inexpensive and far prettier than I expected it to be.
Details To Consider When Updating Closet Doors
If you’re looking to update old closet doors, here are a few details to consider first.
Function – For our French doors, they require enough space to open out. This bedroom isn’t huge, but I made sure there would be enough clearance with bedroom furniture. For really small rooms, sliding doors may be a better option.
Budget – Door makeovers can be done on a budget, especially if you have any DIY skills. If you have to hire someone to do it, that’s going to drive the overall cost up. That said, unless you’re handy, hanging doors perfectly straight and level can be difficult, so it may be worth hiring out.
Style – Last but not least, consider the overall style of your house. If you live in an ultra-modern house, you probably wouldn’t want to install sliding barn doors, for example.
Past closet door makeovers
Here are a few older closet door makeovers we did in our current house that may help inspire some ideas.
MIRRORED CLOSET DOORS WITH OVERLAYS
An oldie but a goodie – the mirrored closet doors we installed in our daughter’s room years ago. This was SUCH an easy DIY and had a huge impact on the room. Plus, mirrored closet doors are a great option for small rooms and also double as a full-length mirror.
diy SLIDING BARN DOORS
Another makeover we did was to remove ugly bifold doors from one bedroom closet and replace those with DIY sliding barn doors my husband made. This was also a space saver for this small bedroom.
REPLACING UGLY LOUVERED BIFOLD DOORS
In our kitchen, we have ugly louvered bifold doors – this closet requires ventilation, so I had a hard time coming up with an idea for replacing these. But when it finally came to me, it was worth the wait! See how we transformed the bifold doors here!
Budget-friendly tips for bedroom closet door ideas
There are lots of creative ways to makeover outdated bedroom closet doors on a budget.
Paint always goes a long way and is a great starting point if you can’t completely change the doors out. You could also consider adding simple trim molding to flat wooden doors to add character. (Love this pretty painted closet).
Sometimes, even just changing the hardware or doorknobs is enough to update older doors. If your doors are really terrible and you don’t have a budget, you could remove them and hang curtains instead.

What do you think of French doors on the bedroom closet?
Love the look of the French closet doors. Very pretty with the sheer curtains too.
I did chuckle when I saw the Scolloped heading in light of of how popular they are. Beautiful doors. It looks like there is another room to enter instead of just a closet. Love the ceiling fan too!
Love your doors. The difference they make is worth the cost!
When I designed our new home in 2004, in country N.S.W. Australia, I made sure all of our internal doors were glazed and mullioned, including the single doors.
Those opening into private rooms, or pantry and storage rooms were built using opaque glass. They were such a success. If I had the opportunity to build again, I would insist on the same type of doors. They take me back to the 5 wonderful years we lived in The Maritimes, Canada.
Thanks, Kathryn! The doors you described sound beautiful!!
