St Patricks Day Wreath DIY
ADD A TOUCH OF IRISH CHARM TO YOUR HOME WITH THIS EASY-TO-MAKE ST. PATRICKS DAY WREATH DIY USING ONLY A FEW SIMPLE ITEMS!
Last week I shared with you guys how I made a Valentine’s wreath using ribbon. I loved how that turned out so much that I made another version for St. Patrick’s Day!
If you read that post, this may be a little bit redundant but I do share more tips in this one. I actually made this wreath before the Valentine’s wreath, so I made a few notes to remember.
I did not use a shamrock wreath form, instead I went with a round one but the concept is exactly the same. While, I don’t put out a ton of St. Patrick’s Day decorations I do like to have a few! It’s a fun holiday!
Supplies Needed For St Patricks Day Wreath DIY
- A round wire wreath form (I used a 12″ size)
- 4-8 rolls of ribbon (approx 20 yards)
My ribbon was purchased at Michael’s store, and I couldn’t find exact matches on their website. But here are four ribbons that would give you the same look.
The amount of ribbon you’ll need will depend on what size wreath form you buy. I used a 12″ size round wire form and 4 rolls of ribbon (that equaled about 14 yards) weren’t enough. I would say at least 20 yards will be needed.
Alternatively, you could use strips of fabric to make this wreath rather than ribbon.
You can use a mix of different size ribbons or fabric widths and patterns for interest. I also used a mix of wire and non-wired ribbon. The wired ribbon is good because you can shape it better when your wreath is complete.
I did end up spending far more on ribbon for this one than I anticipated. That was because it was my first time making this and I wasn’t sure how much I would need. If you plan ahead, you can wait until they go on sale or shop around for the best pricing.
Step-By-Step Tutorial for Easy DIY Wreath
First, cut your strips of fabric to approximately 6 inches. I varied mine a little on purpose. It will add to the overall look if they aren’t exactly the same.
I used four different ribbons, some solid, some patterned, and some with lace edging.
Start anywhere on your wreath and slide a piece of fabric or ribbon underneath. Next, simply tie the ribbon around the wire. Tie it as if you are tying your shoes without making a bow.
I jumped around to different areas on the wreath. I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough ribbon so I wanted to be sure what I did have was spaced evenly. That way, you can always go back later and add more.
For wider ribbon, I found cutting those a little longer makes them easier to tie. Additionally, with some of the wide ribbon I ended up cutting them longways in half to spread them out more.
When I was about halfway done, I added a longer ribbon to the top middle of the wreath to use as a hanger.
After getting a substantial amount of ribbon on the wire wreath form, bunch them up to see how it looks. Here you can gauge how much more area you’ll need to cover.
Once the whole wreath is covered, look it over. You may need to trim some of your longer ribbon. I also fluffed mine up and shaped it when done.
Mine is currently hanging on this cabinet door but I do plan to move this to the front door after Valentine’s Day. How cute is this new wreath?
Festive Wreath Embellishments For St Patricks Day WREATH DIY
I like the simple look of my wreath but there are countless ways you could embellish this for St Patrick’s Day! You could add gold coins, a pot of gold, or four leaf clovers with a dot of hot glue.
Or use ribbons to make it the color of the rainbow! Lastly, you could add a leprechaun hat topper to your St. Patricks Day wreath.
I’m sure you could find any of these St. Patrick’s day decor items, (plus wire wreath forms and ribbon) at your local Dollar Tree or craft store. I will link some of these items below as well.
This entire wreath took about an hour to make. It’s so simple but so cute! I love these wreaths for their shabby chic cottage vibe.
Not only is the St. Patrick’s Day wreath DIY easy enough for kids to do, but it would also be fun for a girl’s night in. I’ll bring the wine!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
