I read somewhere recently that 10 minutes of planning in the morning can save you 2 hours a day! Isn’t that crazy? In that spirit, I set out to help my younger daughter get her new off-campus dorm bedroom organized before classes begin.
The desk was left here from the last student who occupied this room. It’s not the prettiest desk but it fits the space well and gives her plenty of room to work.
If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, I wanted to keep this as simple as possible. Fortunately, in this digital age, we no longer need a ton of office accessories to work. But pens and notebooks will always be a necessity. The first thing we bought was this carousel for pens. It’s cute and has plenty of storage in a small amount of space.
And doesn’t everyone has a favorite pen? The one you go searching the house for when you need to write. I set my daughter up with a whole supply of our favorites, in a rainbow of colors after shopping at Target before the back to school rush.
I bought the Pilot Pen G2 18pk of assorted pens. We like these because they have smooth-writing gel ink and a comfortable grip. I guess we aren’t alone in our choice of favorite pen, as this is the #1 selling gel ink brand/pen brand in America. I also picked up the FriXion Light Pastel Highlighters 5pk, the lighter colors are so pretty.
My daughter mentioned she’d like a corkboard as well. Most cork boards I saw were pretty ugly. However, I did find one that looked nice. It’s actually covered in thick linen rather than cork. I hung it above the desk and added a few string lights because every dorm room needs some string lights, right?
Even the pens add a nice little pop of color to the desk area.
While we were working on organizing the desk, we had a little help from her roommate’s frisky kitten, Zelda. She is SO cute and into everything!
If this desk will stay this organized is anybody’s guess, but at least we are starting out on the right foot.
We are also planning to do a budget-friendly makeover for the rest of this room to make it more inspiring, so stay tuned for that. I’m hoping to have that done by next week. (UPDATE: you can see the full dorm room makeover here).
I usually replenish our home office supplies this time of year as well when stores are fully stocked and supplies are on sale. If you’re looking to restock as well, you can find the Pilot Pen sets on sale now at Target, see the promo codes below.
