Christmas Plants For Front Porch
PUTTING TOGETHER A WELCOMING HOLIDAY ENTRYWAY WITH CHRISTMAS PLANTS FOR THE FRONT PORCH.
I couldn’t let our last Christmas in this house go by without decorating our small front porch.
Even though its small and pretty basic as far as porches go, it’s my favorite spot to decorate. The few DIY projects we did out here did take this porch up a notch. Such as adding lattice with a climbing hydrangea and painting the concrete porch floor.
Christmas Planter Ideas For Front Porches
To enhance your front porch for the holidays, try festive Christmas plants like poinsettias, evergreen wreaths, and miniature pine trees. Use vintage or decorative planters, string lights, seasonal accents, and Christmas decor to create a warm, inviting holiday display.
Festive Christmas Plant Ideas for Small Porches
What I started with this year is this pretty wooden arbor made of branches. I wrapped that with faux greenery and a red berry garland. Lastly, I wrapped a strand of string lights around it.
This wooden obelisk I bought is no longer available, but here are a few other pretty options.
I always do some kind of trio right next to the front door. For winter porch pots I have to get creative because there aren’t that many options for winter plants here in the Northeast.
On the step stool, I used a terra cotta planter with another small obelisk. That one I wrapped in a faux magnolia garland. I continued the strand of lights around that as well.
In the pot on the ground, I planted a white cabbage plant. The ornamental cabbages also come in light purple but I liked white better for the Christmas season. I had cabbage plants last year and they held up well in the cold weather with little care.
To fill in the pot I simply placed fresh greenery branches I cut from evergreen trees.
Fill In With Baskets And Garden Decor
On the wood bench area, I foraged around my house and yard to see what I could pull together.
The basket is filled with more fresh evergreen branches with a wicker orb that lights up in the center. I also tucked a few large seed pods and giant pinecones in and around my planters.
I brought this angel statue out of the side garden and gave her a more prominent place on the porch. With clippings from my boxwood shrub, I made her a little evergreen crown.
Mini Christmas Tree And Evergreens
I found a really cute mini Christmas tree at Lowes for under $30 so I used that under the mirror. I had this green bucket already, which was the perfect container for the tree.
The tree is decorated with small red ornaments and brown ribbon to pull in the colors from the magnolia leaves and red berry garland near the front door area.
Any evergreen that can be in a container works well for Christmas plants on the porch. For example, I moved this small potted boxwood I had in the yard to the porch. I sprinkled a handful of mini ornaments in the base of the pot for color.
In the spring I bought several small fern plants that are still going strong. Every year I bring those in and they don’t hold up inside. This year I’m going to try leaving them outside for the winter months and only bring them in if it goes below freezing. I’m hoping this way I can keep them alive until early spring.
Ferns are a great low maintenance plant. They do well for me in complete shade with well-drained soil. They also held up well to drought.
Creative Christmas Plant Arrangements for Your Porch
Another idea for containers is to fill them with seasonal elements. Here, I filled an old crock with pinecones. Those are actually the pinecone picks I made a few years back. They come in handy every year.
Another option you can try for winter planters is poinsettia. I’ve only used them as indoor plants so I’m not sure how those hold up outdoors. They do great indoors for me.
It may be a monochromatic color palette for Christmas but I find it peaceful for the holidays. I considered using a red quilt on the black bench for more color but I decided the calm neutrals are what I’m feeling this holiday season after a hectic year.
Adding Color To Winter Planters
For more color, you could use additional bright red berries, ornaments, and ribbons. Another idea for color is a homemade fruit garland made with orange slices. You could also fill outdoor planters or containers with colorful ornaments as opposed to the pine cones like I did. If you have access to any holly shrubs, holly berry branches would be a festive addition with a pop of color.
Additionally, white pine or birch branches would add more white accents. Those are a great choice if you want a more winter wonderland vibe.
I hope you found some Christmas planter ideas. Evergreens are my go-to for beautiful winter planters in the winter months. In warmer climates, you will have more options. I’d suggest going to the local nursery and seeing what outdoor plants they have available this time of year. You may discover festive plants you didn’t know about.
Because the porch is the first thing people see when they come up to my house I like to take the time to make it pretty.
With a little care and creativity, your porch or entryway will become a warm holiday welcome that charms you as well as your guests this Christmas time!
