Master Bathroom Makeover Ideas
I’m so excited to finally share our full bathroom remodel with you! If you’ve been searching for master bathroom makeover ideas, I think you’ll love seeing how we transformed this space into something both beautiful and practical.
I mean, who hasn’t dreamed of turning their master bathroom into a retreat?
After so many months of planning, our master bathroom is finally finished, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! I’ve already shared with you guys our inlaid tile floors and walk-in shower tile, but today I wanted to share the rest of the details.
Freestanding Tub

As you can see we have a freestanding tub (a total dream come true), which is in a nice little nook next to the shower. It’s such a luxurious touch to have in our primary bathroom!
My design process for this bathroom (and for the whole renovation) was to make classic design choices that weren’t basic. I love vintage style and country home style, so every decision was based with those factors in mind.
bathroom storage

While I haven’t gone all out with bathroom decor just yet (I’m embracing the minimal look for now), I have been trying out a few different pieces in here to see what works.
The wooden cabinet doesn’t take up much space but offers extra storage. The baskets hold hand towels and washcloths. We don’t have a linen closet near this bathroom, so we carved out space in our master closet to add shelves for extra storage.

I also have an old crate tucked into the corner. It works as a plant stand but also for storage. Bringing in a few vintage-inspired accents was a great way to add personality without overwhelming the clean design.
Additionally, the added storage has simplified our daily routine, keeping the counters clear and everything neatly organized.
bathroom window treatments
Our bathroom has two windows, so we get lots of natural light. I opted for lots of windows in this house because I always felt our last house didn’t get enough light.
I’ve also been experimenting with different window treatments, so you might notice a few variations in the photos as I figure out what works best.
Cafe curtains were the look I wanted in here, but I wasn’t comfortable not having full coverage on the bathroom windows. For that reason, I got Roman shades. I may end up doing a combination of both.
bathroom vanity
While I really wanted an antique piece of furniture as a vanity, the logistics of getting one and having it sealed and customized would’ve taken too much time. Instead, I went with this beautiful wood vanity that does look as if it could be a vintage piece of furniture. Especially when paired with this antique mirror I found.

This vanity came with the sink top but not with a backsplash. I ended up ordering a custom-made stone backsplash. It wasn’t as expensive as I imagined it would be. I wanted to go with a taller version for effect, but I wasn’t sure how high the beadboard would be or where the mirror would be placed. For that reason, I stuck with a more traditional 4″ height backsplash.
The cabinet pulls on the vanity are silver, which is in contrast to all the brass finishes, but that doesn’t bother me. I can always change them out later if it does.
Initially, the architect had planned for a double sink vanity in this bathroom. My husband, for some reason, really didn’t like the idea of a double vanity and thought it unnecessary. I liked the idea of more countertop space for the vanity, so we opted for a single sink instead.
round mirror and light fixtures

Simple upgrades like lighting and mirrors can completely change the look of a space, making them some of the easiest master bathroom makeover ideas to try.
I had quite a few vintage wall mirrors I had been holding on to for the move, which was great because it gave me options that I could try out in the space when the time came to pick one.
Once I had those in place, I had to figure out light fixtures. Over the vanity, single light fixtures are not my favorite, so I opted for two wall sconces. Finding two I could settle on took surprisingly long! To further complicate this, pairing a sconce with a round mirror was more challenging than finding something that goes well with a rectangular mirror.
The sconces I chose were the ones I kept going back to. There were one or two others I loved, but they were either too expensive or they were on backorder. These are classic and the subtle loop pairs well with a round mirror.
I recently noticed another wall sconce that was similar, but the shade had pretty detailing on it. This would also be a good option.
We do have a light fixture for over the bathtub, but we are still waiting on the electrician to come and install that. I’ll share more pictures in the future (and on my Instagram) when that’s in.
master bathroom paint colors

In our last house, I had painted the bathroom beadboard in a paint color called Off White by Behr a few years ago. I always loved how that looked paired with white walls, so I used the same color scheme in this bathroom. The top half of the walls is Polar Bear, also from Behr paint.
The mix of soft colors and vintage-inspired fixtures really makes the space feel calm and inviting, which is exactly what we hoped for in our master bathroom.
bathroom details

For the faucet, I chose the same exact model as I have in our small bathroom. I love the finish and style of these faucets, and I even used the same brand in the same finish for our kitchen.
One thing not pictured is the tub filler we chose. It’s tucked into a corner, but I’ll have to get some more photos with that.
Our builder added 3/4 beadboard moldings to each of our bathrooms as I requested. Beadboard adds instant character and helps give these rooms a more historical look.

I ordered several of these brass hooks (for both bathrooms), which we installed on the top of the beadboard molding. They’re prettier than towel racks and just as functional.

The one painting you see on the wall is the only art I’ve hung in here so far. I’m waiting until I find an idea or artwork that is special.
walk-in shower
And here is the view as you walk in the door. I’ve shared the tile before, but not since adding glass shower doors. The patterned tile is a beautiful focal point that you can see from the master bedroom.

I’ve shared our shower tile and floor tile previously, but here is the view with the shower doors in place. We have a generous amount of floor space in this bathroom, so I’m happy I took the time to pick a floor tile that I really love.
Choosing the right tile turned out to be one of the best master bathroom makeover ideas for giving the space character and charm.
Honestly, I’ve always preferred the shower curtain look over glass doors because the glass has a more modern look, which is opposite of my style. However, I am getting used to them.
I chose this shower head with a champagne bronze finish, and have been very pleased with it. I went with the same brand for shower heads in both bathrooms. The price was reasonable, and I liked the brass colored finish.
Master Bathroom Renovation Takeaways

This bathroom was previously a bedroom before the renovations. Here is what that looked like. Can you believe this is the same room? The door now opens up from the back wall (where the new bedroom is).

Using that room allowed us to create a large bathroom with an almost spa-like feel! So much careful planning went into this space. Such as the room layout, design elements, natural stone materials, etc.
Having always been DIYers ourselves, there are some layers of stress when working with a contractor and doing a full remodel. Being on their timetable is one. Decisions have to be made, and once things are ordered and installed, there’s no going back.
Fortunately, we are so happy with how this bathroom turned out. Looking back, our remodel gave us plenty of bathroom design ideas that can work in any size space, from clever storage to timeless finishes. Now I just need a few finishing touches to complete our dream master bathroom!
What do you think of our master bathroom remodel? I hope you found some master bathroom ideas you can use yourself!
Keep in mind that although some master bathroom makeover ideas focus on big changes, even small updates can completely refresh the space! (Remember my tile floor stickers, for example!)
