Using AI Interior Design generator

IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO REDECORATE A ROOM, USING AN AI INTERIOR DESIGN GENERATOR WILL HELP YOU HONE IN ON YOUR STYLE AND KEEP THINGS CONSISTENT!

I’ve been experimenting off and on with Ai interior design generator programs. After finding one I like, I have to say it’s addicting!

There has been a lot of concern with using AI, and justifiably so. For anyone in the creative field such as writers, artists, and even bloggers it’s a real threat to people’s income. No one wants computer bots stealing their ideas and regenerating them.

However, the power of artificial intelligence can’t be denied. There are so many ways it can be a useful tool, such as generating interior design ideas.

Ai isn’t perfect and won’t always generate a perfect room but I have to say it’s great for generating ideas you can use. Today I will talk about one program I’ve been using because it’s the best one I’ve found so far.

ai interior design generator

As I mentioned, I’ve tried a few AI interior design generators. Both on the computer as well as apps. The ai tool I like best is called Midjourney.

I expected AI to be difficult to learn but once you’re familiar with the website you’ll see it’s a user-friendly interface.

Midjourney is for use on desktops, I don’t believe they have an app. It’s available under Discord.com. To use it, you’ll need to set up a free account with Discord first.

For interior design ideas, there are two ways you can use Midjourney. You can upload a picture of your room and then type prompts based on your design preferences such as “traditional living room”. It will then generate new images based on your photo and command.

You can also use it to generate general ideas without using a photo. For that, you can simply type a command such as “create a traditional style kitchen using blue”. You can enter in as many different styles as you can think of to get different perspectives.

It’s really pretty cool what this program comes back with!

generate design ideas using prompts

Here are a few examples of rooms I created with Midjourney using simple text prompts.

First, I typed in “cozy cottage kitchen” and Midjourney gave me these images.

Isn’t that amazing? In seconds, you’ll get rooms with different layouts and furniture arrangements in the interior style you typed.

If there is a room shown in the grid that you’d like to see better, you can bring that image up by itself. I’ll show you exactly how to use Midjourney later in this post.

From the four images I was given, I wanted to see two of those up closer.

It looks like something out of a fairy tale, doesn’t it? Here’s the second one I wanted to see better.

Next, I wanted to create a living room with the same style so I typed “cozy cottage living room”. Here’s my favorite result from that one.

Here is another option that was generated using “cozy cottage living room”.

As you can see, with the help of AI you can come up with fresh ideas for decorating. For all of these images, simply using “cozy cottage” along with the room type gave me all these spaces.

The best thing about using text prompts that align with your favorite style of interior design is that you can see at a glance what similar design elements are in each photo.

Though I didn’t use any color prompts, I got back a similar color palette for each room. You’ll notice all warm white color schemes with wood tones. You can see that earthy materials were used such as wood, brick, and stone in all the photos. You can also see all the sofas are in warm whites.

If you’re planning to redecorate a room, using an AI interior design generator will help you hone in on your style and keep things consistent!

As far as interior design tools go, it’s a great starting point.

Use your own pictures with an AI generator

Another way that an Ai interior design generator can be useful is if you want to see what you can do with an existing room in your own house.

I have just started experimenting with this option myself.

First, a few quick tips for using AI to generate images based on your photos:

  • Use light and bright photos
  • Make sure the room is as uncluttered as possible
  • Try and get the whole room in the photo, not just a corner or half the room
  • Use a photo of a single room

To begin experimenting with this feature I uploaded an older picture of my kitchen. Here is the photo I used.

SIMPLE SMALL KITCHEN IDEAS WITH WHITE AND BLUE

I used the prompt “vintage cottage kitchen” and it returned these options.

While I appreciated the instant transformation, I didn’t love any of those so I moved on to a different room. Next, I used a photo of a family member’s living room. Here is the photo I uploaded.

For this room, I used the prompt cozy cottage living room again.

LIVING ROOM AI INTERIOR DESIGN GENERATOR

Again, I didn’t love any of these but here is a good time to point out, that AI-generated images aren’t always perfect. Even with this advanced technology, it can sometimes bring back odd features.

As you can see, some of these rooms have odd furniture arrangements. Sometimes I’ll get too much furniture crammed together, such as two coffee tables, or windows in odd places.

It’s not a perfect science. Yet.

I wasn’t ready to give up on my living room photo at this point. Next, I used “cozy cottage living room using neutrals and green”. Here’s what I got back.

MPLR after Ai

Much better.

Here’s a close-up of one of these rooms that caught my eye.

For the most part, Midjourney is close to perfect at generating images. Better than others I’ve tried. Here’s another close-up from the last set of four.

Here the windows aren’t in the same spots as my original picture but even so, I found tons of ideas with these. Who doesn’t love a cozy living room?

I could go on and on playing with prompts for different interior design styles but you get the idea!

But this tool isn’t just for interior design. You can use it for exterior design as well. Here I typed “cape cod exterior cottage style”.

Or gardens. Here I typed “small cottage garden in backyard”.

How To Tell If an image is ai

After experimenting with using AI to generate designs, I’ve been better able to spot them online. One telltale sign is that the AI images tend to have a glow to them. If you go back and look at what I generated you can see it.

Some platforms, such as YouTube are making it mandatory that you label ai generated photos as such. Which I think is a great idea. I’ve already seen Instagram accounts with millions of followers using AI images only.

That becomes a problem for designers, bloggers, and creators who spend countless hours designing rooms. Even the best designed real life kitchen would have a hard time competing with some of these fairy-tale level AI images.

As a user, or someone looking for ideas, it creates the problem of attainable design. Unless money is no object, of course. But this problem doesn’t just exist for interior design, this would be a problem for food bloggers, artists, writers, and any other creative industry you can think of.

However, as I mentioned, I do love it for generating ideas. As well as for experimenting with different styles. And it’s great in helping to decipher the characteristics of a specific design style.

more about midjourney

As I mentioned, the Midjourney platform can be found under Discord.com. To use it, you’ll first need to create a free account with Discord. I happened to already have one from a blog collaboration I did a while back with Google.

When I signed up for MIdjourney more recently, I was able to use a free plan because they were having a trial. I don’t believe they are offering a free version anymore so you’ll need a paid account to use it.

how much is midjourney

I liked it enough (ok I’m addicted) that when my free trial was over, I signed up for their least expensive plan, which is $8/month.

Another thing to note is that the images you generate are NOT PRIVATE. They can be seen by other users on the platform. They do have a plan where you can keep your images private but it’s expensive, I believe that one was $60/month.

For experimenting, I am fine with using the most inexpensive plan. However for a business looking to generate logos (yes you can do that too) a private plan may be better. Or maybe you want to generate professional headshots of yourself that you wouldn’t want floating around the internet.

using midjourney’s channels

When using Midjourney, there are different channels or “rooms” in which you create your images. These rooms will have other users in them which I didn’t like. While waiting for my images to generate, I can see what everyone else is doing.

You can, however, create your own channel where you can work alone. You can get that feature with the basic paid plan. But your generated images are still somewhere on the platform for others to see.

When you upload your own images to the platform, those are private. No one else sees those, from what I understand.

Here I’m going to share a few screenshots of how I use Midjourney to create these designs. I created my own private channel so it isn’t cluttered with other’s images.

If you want to know how to create your own channel, I suggest this YouTube video. It was very helpful for me. She also shares in that video how to upload your own images, though some of her settings looked a little different than mine.

Here’s a look at how it looks when using this platform to generate images.

midjourney-screen-shot - AI interior design generator

In the bottom left corner text box, you simply type “/imagine” and the prompt box will come up. In that box, you can type descriptive words to generate any image you can think of and hit enter on your keypad.

For these images, I typed in “cottage style bedroom with neutral colors” and hit enter.

That will give you a box containing four images. Once you get those you have options on what to do with them.

To see the grid bigger click on it. Once you do that, you can also right-click it to save it to your computer.

You can also single out an image from the grid to see that larger or save it separately. From the above grid, I wanted to see the bottom right bedroom closer.

To see that by itself, I clicked the box underneath that says U4. That means upscale image #4.

Now I can click on that to bring it up larger and save it individually.

Alternatively, you can also click on variations. For this room, I clicked on V4 under the original grid and ai gave me these variations.

Isn’t that nuts?? Such innovative features!

You can also single out any of these if you’d like.

Redecorate your room using ai

The steps to use Midjourney to redecorate a room in your home is very similar to the above with a few tweaks.

Go to the plus sign in the bottom left corner and click that to show the pop-up. Click Upload a file and choose your photo. Once you have your photo in there, hit enter to send it.

using midjourney

Go back to the chat box and type “/imagine” to bring up the prompt box. Now click and HOLD your photo and drag it into the prompt box – but don’t hit enter yet.

Once your photo is in there you will see the text. Right after the text type “/ describe what you want to see“. Now hit enter and it will generate your photos.

You can see I typed “/create a cottage style kitchen with green and neutral colors” after my image text. This was the result of that prompt with my kitchen photo.

One simple upload gives you all that. It’s that easy!

Sourcing the home decor

Once AI generates a design that you love and want to replicate, the process of finding the furniture and decor begins.

There is one really easy way to begin sourcing the home decor that was generated by AI! And that is with Pinterest.

If you pin your created design on Pinterest, and then go back to your pins and click on that image it will bring it up. In that screen, white dots will appear on items in the room.

how to source home decor for a makeover

Click on any one of those to shop for similar products. For example, I clicked on the wall art and this screen came up.

how-to-source-items-for-a-home-makeover

That really can be a time saver when decorating multiple rooms.

The way I feel about this feature on Pinterest is similar to how I feel about AI. It’s helpful, but when Pinterest generates “shop the look” on a room in my own house that I pinned, there’s less reason for someone to click over to my blog.

Regardless, you can see how using AI would be useful, can’t you? Not to mention fun! It can definitely help you get started on your interior design decisions.

Though I currently have a love/hate relationship with AI there’s no doubt it’s here to stay.

Like all things that change, sooner or later we’ll get used to it. AI is a powerful tool and likely the future of interior design. Who knows what innovative features it will bring next?

I’m sure I’ll be using it on my next interior design project.

What are your thoughts on using AI technology for interior design?

  1. Thank you for sharing such detailed information. I didn’t know a program was available for general use like this. I agree that AI can be an issue for creative professionals, but I compare this to the statement decades ago that computers would replace humans. In my experience, computers created more jobs. Yes, times changed, but everyone adapted. Going forward I know this is the future. I don’t always agree with it, but it’s here. I hope there will be an avenue for creatives to capitalize on it.
