How To Refresh Your Home For Spring: Cottage Style
If your home is feeling a little winter-weary (like we are), these easy cottage-style spring home refresh ideas are all about small touches that make everything feel lighter and brighter again.
There’s something about that first warm spring day that makes everything inside suddenly feel… heavy.
The wool throws. The dark accents. Even the pillows that felt cozy in January start to feel like they’re weighing the room down. And every year, right around this time, I get the urge to open the windows, let the air in, and give the whole house a gentle reset.
Nothing crazy. Just a simple refresh that makes everything feel lighter, softer, and alive again.
Today I’m sharing three design boards I created for the kitchen, living room, and bedroom, along with the exact elements that make the biggest impact without requiring a renovation (or a second mortgage).
Because spring decorating should feel easy. Not like a production. Especially after the long winter we’ve had.
Spring Cottage Style Decorating Ideas
Cottage style and spring go hand in hand. Both are relaxed, natural, and a little imperfect in the best possible way.
Cottage style isn’t about everything matching. It’s about creating rooms that feel collected, comfortable, and lived-in.
For spring, that means focusing on:
- Lighter colors and softer contrast
- Natural materials like wood, linen, and wicker
- Vintage or vintage-inspired pieces
- Florals and botanical elements
- Removing visual heaviness rather than adding more
Think of it as letting the room breathe again.
Cottage Style Spring Kitchen Decor

The kitchen or dining room is the easiest place to start, because small changes make a big difference.
For the kitchen and dining area, I focused on budget-friendly cottage decor ideas. Such as a fresh runner for the table, a vase full of spring branches, and simple candle holders.
You don’t really need to buy anything for a kitchen refresh. A bowl of lemons on the counter, a stack of pretty plates on open shelving, or even tying a soft ribbon around a candle can make it feel intentional without spending a dime. It’s less about a full makeover and more about those little touches that say, we finally made it to spring.

The living room tends to carry the most visual weight after winter. Heavier pillows, thick throws, and darker accessories, all things that felt cozy a few months ago.
Swap out heavy throws for softer, breezier textures, fluff the pillows you already have, and maybe tuck in one with a subtle floral or stripe for a little seasonal nod. A simple branch clipping in a crock, a stack of fresh books, or moving a lamp to a brighter corner can make the whole space feel refreshed.

For the living room-focused design boards, I started with area rugs. The striped rug is ideal for spring and summer, but I do love it layered with the patterned brown rug for more interest. I like the most visual weight lower in the room, such as the floor.

Then I layered in some florals and green tones. The sconce with green shade is a favorite. I wanted to use that in our small bathroom makeover, but it was on backorder, and I couldn’t wait that long for it.
One of the biggest cottage style secrets is mixing textures instead of relying on color alone. When everything is similar in tone but varied in texture, the room feels layered without feeling heavy.
It’s the difference between cozy and crowded.
cottage bedroom spring refresh
The bedroom might be my favorite place to refresh for spring, because the changes are so simple and the payoff is huge.
Nothing feels better than climbing into a bed that feels crisp and fresh after months of winter bedding.
This isn’t about buying an entirely new bedding set. Often just folding the duvet at the foot of the bed and letting a lighter quilt take the lead is enough.
Once I started this design board, it admittedly became less about spring decorating and more about designing a bedroom I loved. Our main bedroom is one room I haven’t gotten to yet in our new home, so I’m still spinning ideas for it.
The foundation for this board was again layering rugs, neutral art, and that amazing light fixture. I also added a background of the paint color Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore to see how that looked.

If our room were finished, I would add vintage-inspired spring decor. Such as an old quilt on the bed, an antique ironstone pitcher full of flowers, and vintage brass lamps on the nightstands.
The Real Secret to a Cottage Style Spring Home Refresh
It’s not about adding more.
It’s about removing the heaviness of winter.
Before bringing anything new in, try taking a few things away. Clear surfaces slightly. Remove one or two darker accessories. Let the room rest for a minute.
Then add back only what feels right for the season. A few lighter textiles. Something natural. Something old. Something imperfect.
That’s where the magic is.
And the best part? You don’t need to redo everything. Just enough to make your home feel like it woke up from winter.
Which, honestly, is exactly how I want to feel, too.
