Remember a few weeks back when I shared my friend’s kitchen remodel? I wanted to continue that tour to show you their master bathroom. Her tile designs in this coastal-inspired bathroom are some of my favorite elements in the whole house.

My friend was looking to create a space that felt calm, much like the feeling she gets from going to the beach. A little bit coastal without overload. And this new bathroom space? It delivers in every possible way.

Because this wasn’t a simple refresh, it was a true addition; every choice was intentional from the ground up. Layout, light, finishes… and especially the tile.

The freestanding tub is the centerpiece of the entire bathroom, but what truly makes it special is the tile moment underneath it. Instead of blending into the floor, it’s framed with penny tile in a defined rectangle, almost like a built-in rug. It’s subtle, but it completely anchors the space.

Paired with herringbone subway tile throughout the rest of the bathroom, the result feels fresh and timeless, modern coastal, without trying too hard. If you’re gathering bathroom tub surround tile ideas, this one is proof that thoughtful details make all the difference.

A Bathroom Addition Designed for Coastal Living

This bathroom was part of a second-floor addition onto their existing ranch house. They went with a spacious layout and a modern, airy vibe that will stand the test of time.

The freestanding tub is the first thing you see as you open the door. It’s placed under double windows that bring in lots of natural light.

This layout, with the bathtub area centered, was the starting point for the rest of the bathroom.

The Freestanding Tub as the Focal Point

As with my own master bathroom, she opted to have a separate, freestanding tub (every girl’s dream). As mentioned, it’s the focal point of the room as soon as you open the door.

While everything she chose in this bathroom and throughout the house is beautiful, her idea for the floor tiles is especially exceptional.

To add visual interest, she used a different tile on the floor around the bathtub surround than she did on the rest of the floor. It was such a great way to add a design element you don’t typically see and really make the space her own.

With so many tile options out there, it’s easy to feel completely overwhelmed trying to choose the right one. Between all the styles, colors, and patterns, not to mention the endless layout possibilities, it can quickly turn into decision overload. When we remodeled our own home, I probably spent more time on tile than anything else. It just feels like such a permanent choice.

And honestly, that’s because it kind of is. Tile sets the tone for the whole space, so getting it right from the start makes everything else fall into place a whole lot easier.

Her vision was to have a tile surround the freestanding tub that contrasted with the rest of the bathroom floor. An inset pattern tile that frames the area around it, almost like an area rug effect.

It’s a stunning focal point.

She paired it with a natural stone tile laid in a herringbone pattern. It’s a bold design choice, but the soft, muted tones of the stone keep it feeling subtle instead of over the top. Truly so well done.

The pattern adds just enough movement without competing with the rest of the space, and it ties everything together in such a natural way. It feels thoughtful, not trendy, which is always the goal.

Framed Penny Tile Under the Tub

For the inset tile, she chose penny tile in blue and light tan that perfectly accented her coastal vibe. It was then framed out with that subway tile that matches some of the shades in the penny tile.

When she approached her builder with her idea for this floor tile design, he wasn’t immediately on board and needed some convincing. This is something I learned is often the case during our own renovations, when you throw something unexpected in. Rather than giving up, she spoke with the tile installers, and they were not only willing but excited to do it.

For anyone going into renovations, that is something to keep in mind. If there’s something you want to do that’s outside the box, it’s best to let the contractors know early; they don’t like surprises!

Herringbone Subway Tile in the Rest of the Bathroom

Here’s another look at the subway tile that surrounds the inset. Keeping the grout lines the same color as this tile was another smart move. Going with white would not have had the same effect. That’s a small detail that makes a huge difference.

When you open the door, the herringbone pattern immediately draws your eye right to the bathtub area.

Laying the tile in a herringbone pattern makes the room feel more elevated compared to a straight layout. Classic but not boring. It complements the penny tile without competing with it.

walk-in shower tile

Their walk-in shower tile ideas also do not disappoint.

One of the most striking elements in her bathroom is the way the walk-in shower balances simplicity with just enough detail to feel special. The entire shower space is grounded in neutral tones, creating that calm, coastal feel that never goes out of style. She chose larger tiles throughout, which instantly gives the shower area a cleaner, more open look while adding a modern twist to the overall design.

The real moment, though, is the feature wall at the back of the shower. Using the same large format porcelain tile but with a subtle texture that runs vertically, it creates a soft, cascading effect that almost mimics a waterfall when the water is on. It’s such a thoughtful detail, nothing loud or overpowering, just enough movement to draw your eye and elevate the entire shower space.

The remaining walls are finished in coordinating ceramic tiles in the same size and color, but without the texture, allowing the feature wall to quietly take center stage. The shower floor transitions to a colored penny tile that echoes the flooring beneath the freestanding tub, creating a cohesive flow across the room.

And in true form of a well-planned design, even the functional details are handled with care. The built-in niche is tucked along the inside wall, hidden from view, so it keeps everyday essentials within reach without interrupting the clean lines of the shower area.

It’s a perfect example of how thoughtful choices can turn something practical into something that feels effortlessly refined.

She went with cool chrome fixtures throughout this bathroom, which pair perfectly with coastal style and the cool blue paint color she chose for the bathroom walls.

How to Mix Tile Patterns Without It Looking Busy

Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind if you’re looking to mix tile patterns without it looking busy.

  • Keep colors consistent
  • Let one tile be the star
  • Use pattern changes to define zones or add interest
  • Repeat materials elsewhere in the room
  • Match the grout color to your tile color

It’s for all those reasons this bathroom design works so well!

Modern Coastal Bathroom Design Elements

For the double vanity, they chose a natural wood tone, which adds a natural texture. She also installed a matching storage tower next to the sinks rather than putting in a linen closet.

They have a huge bedroom closet next to the bedroom, so adding another closet wasn’t really needed. It was a great opportunity to add another layer of beautiful yet functional design to the bathroom and make the space feel a little more luxurious.

The bathroom sconces and vanity fixtures were also chosen to match the polished chrome fixtures in the shower.

The color palette of soft whites, sandy tones, and sea glass blues all work subtly together without feeling kitschy.

Final Thoughts: A Coastal Bathroom That Feels Like a Retreat

At the end of the day, this bathroom just works. It feels calm, collected, and so thoughtfully put together without trying too hard. Every choice from the tile to the finishes adds to that relaxed, coastal feel without tipping into anything overly themed.

What I love most is that it actually feels livable. It’s beautiful, yes, but it’s also the kind of space you can start your morning in without feeling like you have to tiptoe around it. And at the end of a long day, it’s exactly where you’d want to unwind.

Honestly, it’s the kind of bathroom that makes you slow down for a minute… maybe linger a little longer than usual… and just enjoy being in your own home.

And really, isn’t that the whole point?
