Design Inspired By Art

The best designed rooms have to start somewhere. Inspiration can come from a variety of places. Often times that is in a piece of art.

I recently discovered the most amazing photography website. It’s called SharperPlanet.com. All the photos are incredible. The website states that profits are donated to support nature conservation and sustainable development. One image, of a butterfly, caught my eye and I thought it would be a great starting point to design a room around.

Using this image as inspiration I put together the following design board. To me, this room has a sophisticated feel.

Rug:  The graphic rug is from Ikea.

Sofa & coffee table:   The “Henry” sofa and coffee table are both from West elm. You can find the beautiful box frame coffee table here. West Elm also carries side tables in the marble-topped design.

If you are looking for a more affordable option for the marble-topped tables, I  found a DIY version of a marble-topped table you may be interested in. You can find the how-to over at Provident Home Designs.

Chair:   The chair is from ZGallerie.

Lamp:   Lamp from Overstock.

Curtains:  Drapes from Pottery Barn.

White pillows:  Sheepskin pillows from Crate and Barrel.

Red pillow:   You can find the red lumbar pillow at World Market.

Bench: The beautiful sheepskin bench  by Jonathan Adler is crazy-expensive. You could easily find some faux sheepskin and a small bench and make one yourself. Ikea sells this very affordable sheepskin rug ($9.99!) that would work.

Where have you found inspiration lately?
