DO'S & DONT'S

10 DECORATING

1

Do vary heights for interest! This goes for bookshelves, end tables, even furniture, and lighting.

Don't have everything the same height.

2

Do hang it around eye level.  Average height is 60" up from the floor.

Don't hang your artwork too low or too high.

3

Do keep a list of measurements when shopping.  This is not a lesson you want to learn the hard way with furniture that doesn't fit.

Don't forget to measure before buying furniture.

4

Do mix your furnishings up. You don't want your house to feel like it came off the furniture showroom floor.  Collected adds character!

Don't buy matched sets.

5

Do keep it subtle with a few well-thought-out pieces.  We all love coastal but an entire room of seashells and starfish is just tacky.

Don't get carried away with a theme.

6

Do make sure furniture is visually balanced.  If you have an overstuffed sofa, you need to balance that with something with the same visual weight.

Don't forget about scale.

7

Do invest in dimmer switches, task lighting and the correct light bulbs that don't case a yellow glow.

Don't have bad lighting.

8

Do spend the money on a larger rug to fill the space.  It shouldn't look like a postage stamp in the room.

Don't buy a rug that's too small.

9

Place the rod high and wide to give the illusion of bigger windows.

Don't hang your curtains too low.

10

Do declutter often.  A room does not need to be filled, open space is a good thing!

Don't hang on to clutter.
